Public School Havelock

Public School Havelock

Some idea of the size of Havelock in 1874 can be judged by the fact that Havelock Town School had a roll of 80 while Picton had a roll of 100. And in 1906 the population of Havelock was recorded as 316 "souls." This view shows the school building, with the school children and teachers lined up outside the school's picket fence. Havelock residents were all quietly proud of the fact that their primary school gave the grounding to two of the world's top scientists; Baron Ernest Rutherford, the first person to split the atom and about 50 years after Rutherford, William Pickering became a famous space scientist.
