Francis Trask, came up with the idea of transforming it into a beautiful garden and preparations began in 1887, with many members of the public contributing funds towards the reshaping and plantings.The Pond which had been formally called the "Eel" pond by both Maori and Europeans had a major overhaul. Mind I do remember eels being a major problem back in my day!
